Building with Context from Day 1

Two operators, same tools. The one who feeds Claude context compounds; the one who doesn't keeps starting from zero.

Why the way you set up your environment from the start determines the quality of everything you build. The philosophy of CLAUDE.md, second brains, and context infrastructure.

Most people open Claude Code for the first time and just start typing.

That works for simple tasks. It doesn't work for building systems, running client projects, or getting consistent outputs across sessions. Without context, Claude starts fresh every time. It doesn't know your business, your clients, your preferences, or your stack. Every session is a cold start.

The people who get the best results from Claude Code aren't the most technical. They're the ones who've invested in context infrastructure · the files, folders, and documentation that tell Claude exactly who they are, what they're building, and how they want to work.

The primary tool for this is CLAUDE.md.

What CLAUDE.md is

CLAUDE.md is a markdown file that lives in your project folder or your global Claude directory. Every time you start a session, Claude reads it. It becomes your permanent instruction layer · the context that's always present without you having to re-explain it.

A good CLAUDE.md tells Claude:

  • Who you are and what your business does
  • What you're currently working on
  • Your communication preferences
  • Your tech stack
  • Key contacts and client context
  • How you want it to behave

The more specific this file is, the better your outputs will be. Not just in one session · across every session, permanently.

Why this compounds

Imagine two people both start using Claude Code today:

  • Person A just types prompts into the terminal
  • Person B spends 20 minutes setting up a proper CLAUDE.md, connects Notion via MCP, and documents their processes as they go

After one month, the outputs are noticeably different. After six months, the gap is significant. After two years, Person B is running a system that knows their business deeply · their clients, their processes, their preferences, their history. Person A is still starting from scratch every session.

Key idea

Context compounds. That's the bet. The people who win with Claude Code aren't the most technical · they're the ones who invested in their brain early and let it pay off across every session after.

"All returns in life, whether in wealth, relationships, or knowledge, come from compound interest."

Naval Ravikant

What good context infrastructure looks like

It doesn't need to be complicated. The basics:

  • A global CLAUDE.md with your identity, stack, and preferences
  • Project-level CLAUDE.md files for each client or build
  • A Notion workspace with structured pages for clients, processes, and active projects
  • Process documentation written as you go · not perfectly, just consistently

The technical setup for all of this comes in Claude Code Foundations. The point of this lesson is to understand why it matters before you set it up. People who understand why they're doing something set it up properly. People who don't skip it or do it badly.

Don't skip it.
